Micheal Chapman , a cinematographer and director who worked behind the camera in films like Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and the Last Waltz passed away due to congestive heart failure at the age of 84.
Amy Holden James, his spouse and screenwriter and director confirmed the news of the death on her facebook paGE. She wrote, Michael Chapman ASC, love of my entire adult life, has passed. Until we meet again.
The director and cinematographer was nominated for two Oscars for Raging Bull and the Fugitive . After his work in Taxi driver he was also called the poet of the sidewalks .
Gordon Wills mentores him who had served as camera operator on Hal Ashby’s The Landlord as well as on The Godfather, Up the Sandbox and Klute. He was hired by Ashby as cinematographer on The Last Detail before he was hired by Scorsese for Taxi Driver in 1975.
He has been conferred with lifetime achievement award from the American Society of Cinematographersin 2004 and from the Camerimage International Film Festival in 2016. He retired from production after shooting his last film The bridge to Terabithia and taught film at North Carolina school of the Arts.
