Notable costume designer, Bhanu Atthaiya passes away in Mumbai. She was the first Indian to get Oscars for her costume designs in Richard Attenbourg’s Gandhi. She was known to have worked in more than 100 films in bollywood including the iconic Guru Dutt film, Pyassa and Sahib Biwi aur Ghulam , Lagaan and many more.
The global star, Priyanka Chopra Jonas too shared the iconic picture of Athaiya holding the Oscars and wrote, “What an amazing body of work – Oscar winning costume designer for Gandhi, the inventor of the Mamtaz saree.. an inspiration to so many young designers. Her legacy will live on forever. My condolences to the family.”
Bhannu’s daughter Radhika Gupta told PTI ,“She passed away early this morning. Eight years ago, she was diagnosed with a tumour in her brain. For the last three years, she was bedridden because one side (of her body) was paralysed.”
