One of the most extravagant nights for the fashion industry is back this year and will be celebrated at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Costume Industry, Met Gala will be held on the 13th of September this year. We missed Met Gala last year as it was postponed due to the pandemic. The fundraising Met Ball dress code for this year is ‘American Independence’
Co-chairs for this year will have Amanda Gorman, Billie Eilish, Timothée Chalamet and Naomi Osaka, along with honorary chairs Anna Wintour, Tomford and Adam Mosseri. This year’s Met Gala was inspired by American designer’s responses to the issues towards body inclusivity and gender fluidity. The curator in charge of the costume institute, Andrew Bolton told Vogue –
“American Fashion Is Undergoing A Renaissance”.
On how the fresh designers are open to discourse about the societal and political issues, about culture and diversity as well as transparency for sustainability. The exhibition will be allocated into two parts; the first part ‘“In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”; scheduled in September 2021 and the subsequent part “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” will follow in May 2022. The showing will renovate the arts centre into rooms that will establish themes like, ‘Pleasure’, ‘Revolution’, and ‘Nostalgia’ and so on.
The superlative fragment of this showcase is that, people would not know which celebrities would disclose on the red carpet and what will they wear. The clandestineness of Met Gala brands is more exhilarating from designers to the personalities give the impression of over the top appearances which are undreamed.
Retrospection to the former Met Balls, and the exorbitant presentation of fashion by countless celebrities, from minimalistic looks to resplendent arrivals. One of the superstars which we cannot look past is Lady Gaga.
The creative mastermind behind Gaga’s costume, Brandon Maxwell went overboard, beginning with a fuchsia-pink cape outfit, stripping down to a corseted dusky black gown, Barbie pink column maxi dress and finally revealed her black crystal rooted set of underwear, along with fishnet tights and chunky boots.
Next, is the iconic ‘naked dress’ first worn by Cher at 1974 themed “Romantic and Glamorous Hollywood Design” Gala designed by Bob Mackie. The performer dared to wear the dress in that era, which soon became a talk for the fashion world for quite a while. Comparable mottled nude outfits have re-emerged on the red carpet of Met Gala in the latest years, few appearances which were worn by Beyoncé, Emily Ratajkowski and Kendall Jenner.
Not to overlook RiRi, who succeeded in making the whole red carpet standstill. We could not choose on one look, but her Guo Pei gown was never seen previously, one could not dare to wear on a red carpet. Riri flourished her, what appeared to be a 16 foot stretched cape which weighed about 25kg for the theme China: Through the Looking Glass.
One of the majestic entrances at the red carpet of the Met Gala is by the reality show icon Kim Kardashian. In 2019 she showed off in a nude shade skin-tight costume designed by Thierry Mugler. The dress seemed to look like Kim was dripping wet. Her look was encouraged from a damp yet sensual look by Sophia Loren in the movie Boy on a Dolphin. The fitted corset look has become one of the iconic looks in the history of the Met Gala.
Next is an artist who bought an entire Disney act on sight in 2019. Zendaya managed to steal the show when she walked on the red carpet sideways with her stylist Law Roach. Her stylist swayed their magic wand and transform Zendaya’s dress from a dull grey to a gleaming blue ball gown just like Disney’s Cinderella. The practice of technology is common in fashion production in today’s era, but to achieve such great results was unbelievable.
In 2019 Billy Porter did not admit defeat either. Once he was carried to the red carpet by masculine attendants, he did not stop there and flourished his iridescent golden 10 feet wings on a display, as he was outfitted as an Egyptian Pharaoh, his figure suit and robe designed by The Blonds.
While personalities chose to shock the red carpet with their show-stopping presences, in 2019 few male attendees choose to shine with their indirect but subtle looks. Jared Leto carried an accessory that happens to be a replica of his face designed by Alessandro Michele. Harry Styles, who was a co-chair for the 2019 Met Gala, was also styled by the same designer, in a ruffled sheer top on high-waist bottoms. American actor, Darren Chris on the other hand showed off in a checked harlequin jacket, but what made him stand out on the carpet was his bold cobalt blue under liner. As this year’s Met Gala is just round the corner, we cannot wait for the splendid looks dropping by all the superstars at the 2021 Met Gala held on the 13th of September.
