“Nothing was cruel Like opening a birdcage to let the bird fly out, whilst all the while it’s tethered by the leg, and freedom is only an Illusion.”
The purpose of prison is the purpose of corrections. And it is to segregate criminals from the society in which they would function in Four theories that have been explored throughout our history are the Retribution Theory, Deterrence, Incapacitation, and Rehabilitation Theories.
People may find it hard to believe that there is a place on earth where the jails are feeling alone. All the prisons around the world have the habit of hooligans and criminals residing and spending their years of imprisonment in it.
In a world where crimes are rapidly increasing, this European country will soon shut their prisons as a result of dropping the crime rates. Surprisingly, Netherlands is a country that has no one to put behind the bars. 5 years ago, in 2013, Netherlands had 19 prisoners only and now since 2018, this country doesn’t have any criminals.
According to the report of Telegraph UK published in 2016, Dutch Ministry of Justice suggested overall crime will drop by 0.9 per cent a year in the next five years.
Shutting prisons may mean that about 2,000 people will lose their jobs and only 700 out of them will be transferred to other roles available to the government. However, the decision will also mean that the country have succeeded as a system, as a government and as citizens.
Apart from the statistics the emotions inside the prisons are unimaginable. The Wall and the bars segregate the convicts from the public. Prisons are the separate world that also exists in the same world we are living. Only a life sentenced prisoner can exactly define the word freedom. And only a death sentenced prisoner will know the importance of life. A day inside a prison will not be the same outside the prison.
In India no new prisons were build after the British rule. Building a new prison is not such a fair thing for any government. Across the world all the prisons were build for the Oppression of Revolutionists inside the country instead of controlling the crimes. The prisons continuously doing its role of oppression on Revolutionists like Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, Lenin, Karl Marx, Bhagat Singh, Nelson Mandela and lakhs of unnamed lower middle class citizens.
No one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails. A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones.
