Vertigo opens at the shot when a man being pursued by the police chased over the rooftops by an officer and detective( James Stewart) happens to miss his leap and is hanging onto a gutter for dear life while the officer who attempts to help, falls to his death. While Scottyis asked by a friend to follow his wife possessing some danger near her, Scotty does that. The film takes the viewer into the journey of suspense and thrillers. The wife dies but Scotty becomes depressed. His friend Elster planned to murder his wife and bring out his mistress to resemble his wife. The plan to seduce Scotty is a part of Elster’s plan to murder the actual wife. The director brings out the shot Vertigo very technically. Scotty’s attempt to overcome the fear of vertigo or heights happens at the end of the movie. When he realises that Madeleine is a made-up being and he was duped by Judy and Elster.
The film received mixed reviews on its release but today it is cited as Hitchcook’s greatest work of his career. The film became the greatest film ever made replacing Citizen Kane in 2012 British Film Institute’s Sight and Sound critics. It has been said as the best film by the American Film Institute. It was selected among the 25 films by Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being culture=rally , historically or aesthetically significant.
