As winter is swiftly approaching, it’s time to trade in our sunnies for scarves and our summery, sun kissed glow for the inevitable; chapped skin and cold weather. Lucky for you, this list is here to soothe your winter blues and have you feeling your very best for the coming months.
Winter is notorious for being the cause of dry, flaky skin, which can be painful, so it is imperative to prevent dryness by keeping your skin in good shape. I personally love the Yes To Coconut & Coffee 2-in-1 Scrub & Cleanser Stick, as it both cleanses and gently exfoliates while simultaneously providing moisture. This is perfect if you have combo/dry skin as the coffee grounds scrub away dead skin, while the creamy consistency adds moisture back into the skin’s surface. I would recommend a product like this because it doesn’t overly dry out your skin like other exfoliators. Since it is a solid stick that is water activated, this product is perfect for travel and smells amazing. Also to their pride, the ingredients are atleast 95% natural, free from nasty parabens and phthalates and is a cruelty free company. This is available online for £10.
If you are a fan of liquid lipstick, but hate how much they dry out your pout, then Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Liquid Lipstick may be the product for you. I personally love this lipstick in the colder months because this formula provides opaque colour and a matte finish without making your mouth feel like the Grand Canyon. The shade range is ideal for Autumn/Winter with a focus on wine reds, deep purples and warm nude tones. Because it is a lightweight, whipped textured lipstick, it’s buildable and I would recommend two coats if you are going for a bold lip. This can be used more like a stain when used with a lighter hand and blotted away. This does take a while to dry down fully, but it’s a small price to pay for a comfortable, lightweight lipstick. These are widely available from Boots for £8.49. If you prefer a more moisturising lip colour, then Clinique’s Chubby Stick Intense Moisturising Lip Colour Balm provides a sheer hint of colour with an intense hydrating quality. This is great for busy mornings as it is so easy to apply and provides moisture with minimal touch ups. It’s balmy texture means that it’s brilliant at keeping your lips from drying and its sheer pigment gives a pop of colour to the lips. You can pick this up from Boots for £18.50.
Moisturising is essential for combating dry, tight and chapped skin. Rich moisturisers provide hydration and leave your skin looking youthful and radiant. A moisturiser I would recommend is the Benefit B-Right Total Moisture Moisturising Cream. Aside from having a ridiculously long name, this moisturiser is a holy grail in terms of skin care. This thick cream absorbs into the skin and provides protection, yet doesn’t clog your pores, lasts all day and looks beautiful under makeup. This cream is a beauty staple and available at Boots for £34. If you are looking for a product that helps with fine lines yet also provides the same level of comfort and hydration, I would also recommend Ponds Triple Action Moisturiser as it has anti aging properties and SPF to protect against damaging UV rays and age spots. It also has vitamin A & E which are great at fighting the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines Another aspect about this product that I adore is that it’s £4.99, so it’s both kind to the skin and the wallet.
If moisturising isn’t enough to combat your dry skin this winter, beauty oils are a great way to replenish the skin at night. The best way to utilize a facial oil treatment is after you cleanse, tone and moisturise. Always apply oil after you moisturise for optimum effect. One oil that I praise the most is the Palmer’s Skin Therapy Oil, which has vastly improved the overall tone and texture of the skin. The formula is hypoallergenic, paraben and phthalate free, and is dermatologist tested so it won’t clog your pores. This oil has a blend of 10 pure oils which help to hydrate the skin, while Retinol and Vitamin C helps enhance and even tone and texture. This is a steal at only £9.99 from Feel Unique.com. Another product I would recommend is The Ordinary’s 100% Cold-Pressed Rosehip Oil as it is rich in omega 6, omega 3 and pro-vitamin A, which promotes healthy and replenished skin. I like this oil because it is 100% natural and revitalises the skin. Using oil at night will improve the elasticity and texture and leave your skin baby-soft and ready for the day ahead. You can pick this us from Cult Beauty for £9.
Blush and Bronzer
A big trend for the colder seasons is a dewy and radiant complexion and one of the best products for that is a cream blush. It adds a natural flush to the skin without all the drying powder. Glossier’s Cloud Paint is great for achieving that fresh glow that is buildable and lasts all day. It is excellent with or without foundation and comes in 6 shades designed to work with a variety of skin tones. Just apply a few dabs to the cheeks, blend with fingers and you’re ready to go. The collagen infused gel-cream gives bounce to the cheeks and the pigment provides just the perfect amount of colour. Cloud Paint retails for £15 each, but Glossier also sells a Cloud Paint Duo for £25 on their site. So you can mix and match shades to your heart’s content. If you prefer the ‘chiselled from marble’ look, then Fenty Beauty’s Matte Match Stix is ideal for creating the cheekbones of your dreams. These come in 20 different shades for you to play with and can be used in multiple ways. Use a lighter shade to highlight and conceal and a deeper shades to contour. Because of the shade range you can choose how intense you want your contour and highlight to be. Warm the product up on the back of your hand, apply and blend. These sticks are available exclusively at Harvey Nichols or online from £21 each.
Hands go through a lot on a daily basis, so it is important to take care of them and prevent painful hangnails, nail breakage and blisters. The best way to do this is to keep your hands supple and soft with hand cream. Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Concentrated Hand Cream (Unscented) is a fabulous cream if you suffer from dry hands. It is scentless so there are no drying perfumes in the formula that might further dehydrate your hands. It is non greasy so you don’t need to worry about leaving fingerprints everywhere. This is perfect if you want a “no muss, no fuss” hand cream formula. It is £3.99 and widely available from Boots. If you prefer hydration with a scent that leaves you wanting more, than Soap &
Glory’s Hand Food Hand Cream will make your hands smell delicious and provide intense moisture. This non-sticky, non-greasy moisturiser contains Shea Butter, Macadamia Oil and Marshmallow extract to give you soft and supple hands that are protected from the cold. Creams like this are great if you suffer from brittle nails and cracking skin as natural butters and oil help mend the skin’s surface and strengthen nails. This is available from Boots for £5.50 and will keep your hands covered, so you can focus on the important things.
